iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Duo: What Apple Has Now Confirmed

The rumours have had their moment. Apple has now revealed the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and its first foldable iPhone, officially named iPhone Duo.

Following our earlier preview, here’s what has been confirmed: new camera controls, longer battery life, the A20 Pro chip and a foldable design that gives “opening your phone” a whole new meaning. 

The confirmed release dates

Apple announced the new phones on Wednesday 9 September. The Pro models arrive first, with the Duo following in October.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: two sizes, four colours

The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display. Both use Super Retina XDR OLED screens with an Always-On display and ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz.

The confirmed finishes are Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy, with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options on both models.

Apple has retained an aluminium unibody design, with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. The smaller, redesigned Dynamic Island can show up to three Live Activities at once — handy when your music, directions and match score all want your attention. 

The camera upgrade: variable aperture is official

Both Pro models have three 48MP rear cameras: Fusion Main, Fusion Ultra Wide and Fusion Telephoto, plus an 18MP Center Stage front camera.

The headline addition is a variable aperture on the Main camera, with four settings: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0. It adjusts how much light reaches the sensor and how much of the scene stays in focus. Think brighter low-light shots, softer portrait backgrounds or a group photo with more faces looking sharp.

You can let the phone adjust automatically or use the Camera app’s new Pro controls. The telephoto system offers 4x optical zoom and 8x optical-quality zoom.

Other confirmed capabilities include Photographic Styles 3 with texture and grain adjustments, smart focus tracking, 4K Dolby Vision recording up to 120fps on the Main camera, and 4K Dolby Vision time-lapse. Cinematic effects can also be applied after capture.

More power, longer battery life and faster charging

The Pro models use A20 Pro, with a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine. A next-generation vapour chamber helps manage heat during demanding tasks.

The fast-charging figure requires a compatible 60W-capable or higher adapter with Adjustable Voltage Supply, sold separately. Both support MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W.

Meet iPhone Duo: the foldable has a name

Forget the unofficial “iPhone Fold” and “iPhone Ultra” names. iPhone Duo is Apple’s confirmed foldable, available in Star White and Night Sky.

It pairs a 5.4-inch outer display with a 7.6-inch folding inner display. Both support ProMotion up to 120Hz, while the inner screen has a nano-texture finish to reduce glare. The titanium design measures 5.2mm thick when open, and weighs 254g.

The larger screen supports Split View multitasking, including dragging content between apps. You can also prop the phone up for hands-free calls and viewing. Touch ID is built into the side button, and the Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. 

Duo cameras, performance and battery

The Duo uses A20 Pro and comes in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities.

Its rear cameras are a 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, with 2x optical-quality zoom. There is a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outside and an under-display FaceTime camera inside.

New features make use of both screens: Duo Preview lets your subject see their photo before you take it; Kid Cue uses animations to attract children’s attention; Smart Take captures a photo when everyone is ready; and Duo FaceTime lets nearby friends join via the outer display.

Apple lists up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display, or 31 hours on the inner display, and up to 50% wired charging in around 20 minutes with the specified compatible adapter.

Apple Pencil (USB-C) support has been announced for later this year, so it should not be treated as a launch-day feature.

iOS 27 and Siri AI

The new phones feature iOS 27, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, designed for more natural conversations, understanding personal context and taking actions related to onscreen content.

Siri AI is rolling out in beta in English. Apple has announced French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support for October. Feature availability varies by language and region, and usage limits may apply.

What about the standard iPhone 18?

Apple’s announced lineup includes the 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max and Duo. The reported spring 2027 releases for the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air remain unconfirmed by Apple, so we’re leaving them out of the confirmed launch details.

The iPhone 18: What We Know (So Far) — And Why You'll Want to Be First in Line

Mark Your Calendar: September 9th

Apple has confirmed its September event will land on Tuesday, September 9, 2026. Based on the usual Apple choreography, expect:

• Pre-orders: around September 11–12
• On shelves: Friday, September 18, 2026

This will also be a genuinely historic keynote, the first Apple product launch under new CEO John Ternus, following Tim Cook's step-down as CEO on September 1. So yes, we're not just getting new hardware, we're getting a whole new era of "one more thing." No pressure, John.

What's Actually New on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max?

Here's the fun part. Rumours suggest the Pro models will look very familiar at first glance, same triple-lens camera plateau, same general silhouette as the iPhone 17 Pro, but the details underneath tell a different story:

• A20 chip, built on TSMC's next-gen 2nm process. Translation: faster, more efficient, and probably able to survive being dropped in a swimming pool out of spite alone (not confirmed, please don't test this).
• Variable aperture wide camera — finally giving your low-light shots and dreamy bokeh portraits a proper glow-up.
• A possibly thicker camera plateau, with individual lenses said to protrude a little more than before. Apple engineers apparently decided bigger battery = worth the extra millimetres.
• Rumoured bigger battery in the Pro Max, which might mean a slightly heavier, slightly thicker phone — but hey, more juice for your 3am doom-scrolling.
• A smaller Dynamic Island, quietly shrinking while doing more.
• Whispers of a new colourway: a moody "dark cherry" deep red, reportedly joining light blue, dark gray, and silver in the lineup. Yes, we're already planning our outfits around it.

And the Foldable iPhone? Finally?

After literal years of "will they, won't they," Apple is widely expected to launch its first-ever foldable iPhone this September, right alongside the Pro lineup. Early estimates put the price north of £1,999, so this one's less "impulse buy" and more "justify it to yourself for three weeks first." Either way, it's the biggest iPhone design shake-up since Face ID replaced the home button and we cannot wait to see it in person.

What About the "Regular" iPhone 18?

• iPhone 18 — expected to keep the familiar 6.3-inch display size, likely stepping up to the A20 chip.

None of these are expected to bring major design overhauls — think "refined," not "reinvented." But the software running underneath might be the real headline.

The Real Star of the Show: Siri Gets a Brain Transplant
